Fletcher, Munson, and You
Doug Fearn explores the science of hearing
In 1933, the scientists Harvey Fletcher and Wilden Munson published groundbreaking research that would become known as the Fletcher-Munson curve. Fletcher and Munson found that human perception of loudness is not linear across the frequency spectrum and that in auditory perception, loudness and frequency and are highly interrelated — a fact that will probably be well known to anyone that's ever turned down the volume while listening to something they've been working on and then wondered where all the bass has gone!
In the latest episode of the My Take On Music Recording podcast, Doug Fearn explores the history, science and practical implications of this phenomenon. Doug has been a recording engineer since the 1960s and is the founder/designer behind the coveted D.W. Fearn brand of high-end outboard gear, so he's well worth listening to when it comes to topics like this.
